Account & login
1. How do I sign up?
Open the Steuerbuch sign-up page, enter your email and a password, then click the verification link we email you. Detailed steps are in the Getting started section.
2. I didn't receive the verification email — what now?
Check your spam folder first. If it's still missing, try Login → Resend verification. If that fails, contact support; we can verify manually.
3. I forgot my password.
Click Forgot password on the login page. We'll email a reset link that's valid for 60 minutes.
4. Can I change my email address?
Yes — Settings → Account → Email. You'll have to confirm the change from the new address.
5. Can I use Steuerbuch in English and German?
Yes. The language switcher in the top bar toggles between English and Austrian German (de-AT). Your preference is saved to your profile.
6. Can I have more than one user on the same account?
Multi-user / team support is on our roadmap but not available yet. For now, one login per Steuerbuch account.
7. How do I delete my account?
Settings → Account → Delete account. This permanently erases your invoices, reports and uploaded files. Export your data first if you need a backup.
Billing & plans
8. Is there a free trial?
New accounts get a free trial with the full feature set. The trial length is shown on the Pricing page.
9. What payment methods do you accept?
All methods supported by Stripe Checkout in Austria — credit/debit cards, SEPA Direct Debit, Apple Pay and Google Pay depending on your browser.
10. Can I get a VAT invoice for my subscription?
Yes. Every Stripe receipt is available in Settings → Billing → Invoice history, with your company's UID number on it (make sure it's filled in on your Company profile).
11. How do I upgrade or downgrade?
Settings → Billing → Change plan. Proration is automatic — you only pay the difference for the remainder of the current period.
12. How do I cancel?
Settings → Billing → Cancel subscription. Access continues until the end of the paid period; we don't auto-refund mid-period cancellations.
13. What happens to my data if I cancel?
For 30 days after cancellation, your account is read-only so you can export. After that, we archive and eventually delete the data in line with our privacy policy.
14. Can I pay annually for a discount?
Yes — switch the Pricing page toggle to Yearly to see the discounted rate.
Invoices & OCR
15. Which file types can I upload?
PDF, PNG, JPG and HEIC. You can also forward emails (with the invoice attached or embedded) to your personal Steuerbuch inbox address.
16. How long does OCR take?
Usually a few seconds per page. Large multi-page PDFs or handwritten receipts can take longer. The invoice list shows a progress indicator.
17. The OCR got a field wrong — what do I do?
Open the invoice, click the field and type the correct value. Fields the AI wasn't confident about are highlighted yellow so you know where to look first.
18. Can I upload one PDF that contains several invoices?
Yes — open the file and use Split. Draw page ranges and Steuerbuch creates one invoice record per range.
19. How do I cancel (storno) an invoice?
From the invoice detail page, choose Storno. Steuerbuch creates a reversing record and links the two. The original becomes read-only.
20. How do I mark an outgoing invoice as paid?
Open the invoice and click Mark as paid, or record the payment from the Invoice tracking view. Partial payments are supported.
21. Can Steuerbuch send the invoice to my customer?
Yes. After you finalise an outgoing invoice, click Email — we open a pre-filled message with the PDF attached.
22. How are invoice numbers assigned?
Outgoing invoices use a sequential, gap-free numbering scheme per year (a legal requirement in Austria). Storno records get their own numbering.
23. Can I customise my invoice PDF?
You can change logo, footer text, bank details and default language under Settings → Company profile. Further templating is on the roadmap.
24. What is a collective invoice?
A single invoice that aggregates many delivery notes or small outgoing invoices for the same client over a period (typically a month). See Collective invoices.
VAT & UVA
25. What is the UVA?
The Umsatzsteuervoranmeldung is Austria's monthly or quarterly VAT advance return. Steuerbuch generates it automatically from your invoices.
26. How do I choose monthly vs. quarterly filing?
Settings → Account → UVA filing period. The choice drives all period selectors in the report.
27. Which VAT rates does Steuerbuch support?
20 %, 13 %, 10 %, 19 % (Jungholz/Mittelberg) and 0 %. Reverse charge and intra-community / export treatments are also supported.
28. What's "reverse charge" and when do I use it?
Reverse charge means the recipient reports the VAT, not the supplier. Common in Austrian construction (§19 Abs 1a UStG) and many cross-border B2B services. Set it per invoice in the VAT treatment dropdown.
29. The UVA report shows a warning — is that a bug?
Warnings flag inconsistencies Steuerbuch detected (e.g. an invoice with a VAT rate that doesn't match its line items). They're a heads-up, not a blocker — review the linked invoices and fix or confirm.
30. Can I submit the UVA directly to FinanzOnline from Steuerbuch?
Not yet. Export the report (XLSX or PDF) and enter the Kennzahlen in FinanzOnline, or hand the export to your tax advisor.
31. Does Steuerbuch handle EU intra-community acquisitions (ERwB)?
Yes — mark the invoice as EU intra-community and Steuerbuch books the reverse VAT in the correct Kennzahlen.
32. I'm a Kleinunternehmer (§6 Abs 1 Z 27 UStG). Will Steuerbuch still work for me?
Yes. Create invoices with the 0 % "Kleinunternehmer" VAT treatment and Steuerbuch will include the required statutory note on your outgoing PDFs.
Reports
33. What's the difference between E/A and P&L?
E/A (Einnahmen-Ausgaben) is a cash-basis report used by most Austrian small businesses — an expense counts when you pay it. P&L is accrual- basis — an expense counts when the supplier invoice is issued. Pick the one your accounting method requires.
34. Can I export a report?
Every report has Export → XLSX and Export → PDF buttons.
35. Can I compare periods?
The UVA report has a dedicated Comparison tab (previous period, previous year and monthly trend). Other reports let you change the period selector to run side-by-side exports.
36. What is the Annual statement?
A year-end bundle combining E/A (or P&L), VAT summary, depreciation and stock movements — a convenient hand-off for your accountant.
37. Can I drill into the invoices behind a figure?
Yes. Click the magnifier next to any number (e.g. a Kennzahl row in the UVA) to see the contributing invoices.
38. Do reports update in real time?
Yes — any change to an invoice immediately flows into all reports. No manual "recalculate" step.
Stock & assets
39. Do I have to use the Stock module?
No. If you only sell services, you can ignore it entirely.
40. How does Steuerbuch value my stock?
By weighted average cost. Each purchase updates the average cost; each sale uses the current average to compute profit.
41. Can I correct a wrong stock movement?
Yes — open the transaction and click Reverse. The reversal preserves the original for audit and adjusts the current balance.
42. How are assets depreciated?
Linear and degressive methods are supported. Set the useful life and Steuerbuch generates the schedule and posts the annual depreciation automatically.
43. What if I sell an asset mid-life?
Use Retire / sell on the asset detail page. Enter the sale price — Steuerbuch stops depreciation and books the gain or loss.
Data, privacy & security
44. Where is my data stored?
Current storage and privacy details are documented in the privacy materials linked from the website footer. Steuerbuch is designed for authenticated account access and encrypted browser connections.
45. Who can see my invoices?
Only you — Steuerbuch staff cannot read your invoice content. If you grant explicit support access to debug an issue, it's time-limited and audited.
46. Can I export all my data?
Yes. Settings → Account → Download data export produces a ZIP with all invoices (PDFs) and structured data (XLSX/JSON).
47. Do you sell or share my data?
No. We never sell data or share it with third parties except the strict sub-processors needed to run Steuerbuch (e.g. Stripe for billing).
48. Is Steuerbuch GDPR-compliant?
Yes. You have full rights of access, correction and deletion. The Delete account action wipes your data end-to-end.
Troubleshooting
49. I uploaded an invoice but it hasn't appeared.
Refresh the page. If it's still missing, check Upload → Queue — the file may have failed OCR (e.g. the PDF was password-protected). Remove the protection and re-upload.
50. The OCR result is almost empty.
Usually means the scan is too low resolution or skewed. Re-scan at 300 DPI, straighten the page and re-upload.
51. My UVA total doesn't match my bookkeeper's.
First check that the filing period matches (monthly vs quarterly). Then review the Consistency warnings tab — most mismatches come from one invoice with the wrong VAT treatment.
52. Stripe Checkout won't load.
Disable ad/tracker blockers for steuerbuch.at and retry. Checkout requires
third-party cookies from stripe.com.
53. I changed my language but some buttons are still in the other language.
Do a hard refresh (⌘/Ctrl-Shift-R). PrimeVue locale strings are cached in the browser.
54. The app feels slow today.
Open Settings → About to see current system status. If we're running a heavier background job (large report export), it'll be listed there.
55. Something crashed / I see an error page.
Click Report this issue on the error page — it sends us the (anonymised) context so we can investigate. You can also email support with the error ID shown on screen.
For accountants & tax professionals
Deeper technical answers live in the Professional Guide — this section only covers the questions we get most often from advisors during onboarding and year-end handover.
56. Which Austrian chart of accounts does Steuerbuch use?
The EKR 2024 (Einheitskontenrahmen Österreich). System accounts are
seeded from docs/Kontenrahmenliste/ and you can override name, VAT
default and KöSt non-deductibility per account. See
Professional Guide §3.
57. Does Steuerbuch support degressive AfA (§7 Abs 1a EStG)?
No — only linear AfA is implemented today. The half-year rule (§7 Abs 2) and GWG full write-off are both supported. Book degressive AfA as a manual journal entry if you need it. See Professional Guide §8.
58. How are reverse-charge and IG acquisitions posted in the UVA?
Steuerbuch emits both sides of the reconciliation: the Umsatzsteuer contribution (KZ 090) and the corresponding Vorsteuer deduction (KZ 066 / KZ 065). They net out for the payable but appear on the respective lines of the U30 form. Full mapping table in Professional Guide §4.
59. Is the outgoing-invoice numbering really gap-free?
Yes — numbers are drawn from OutgoingInvoiceSequence on finalise
(not on create). Drafts don't burn numbers. Corrections happen via a
reversing invoice, never by editing a booked one. See
Professional Guide §6.2.
60. How do I produce a year-end package for a client?
Run the Saldenliste, Annual Statement, AfA schedule and the full ZIP export for the year. Full checklist in Professional Guide §12.
61. Is Steuerbuch GoBD-certified?
Not formally certified, but the journal is append-only, reversals preserve the original entry, and all document state changes are logged. See Professional Guide §10.4 for the mapping of principles to implementation.
62. Can I submit the UVA directly from Steuerbuch to FinanzOnline?
No. Steuerbuch computes the U30 figures and exports them to XLSX/PDF; filing happens manually in FinanzOnline.
63. Is there a public API for bulk data access?
The HTTP API primarily serves the Steuerbuch frontend and is not publicly versioned. Stable routes exist for bulk XLSX import/export of invoices, stock items and reports. See Professional Guide §13.
